The source

“Yahweh possessed me in the beginning of his work, before his deeds of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, before the earth existed. When there were no depths, I was born, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was born; while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the beginning of the dust of the world. When he established the heavens, I was […]

Allusion3

A deliberate verbal borrowing without a citation formula.

John 1:1-5

Personified Wisdom, 'with' God 'in the beginning' as the agent/craftsman of creation, is the primary background for the Word who 'was with God' and through whom all things were made. Recurrence of the with-God-at-creation motif and high thematic coherence; widely recognized as John's Wisdom-Christology source.

High confidence
1 Cor 2:6-9 ?

Wisdom 'foreordained before the ages for our glory' (v.7) evokes the personified Wisdom of Proverbs 8, possessed by the LORD 'at the beginning of his work, before the earth was.' The pre-cosmic, pre-temporal location of God's wisdom is the shared point; Paul transposes the Wisdom tradition christologically, so this is figural as much as verbal.

Medium confidence
Eph 3:7-13

'The manifold wisdom of God might be made known... in the heavenly places' personifies and cosmically displays God's Wisdom in a way that draws on Proverbs 8, where Wisdom is present before creation, beside God as he founds the heavens. Coherence with the wisdom-Christology of the letter is strong; the link rests on the wisdom motif rather than direct quotation.

Medium confidence

Echo4

A fainter, low-volume reuse, carried by recurrence or thematic coherence.

1 Cor 1:26-31

Christ 'made to us wisdom from God' (v.30) draws on the personified Wisdom present with God at creation. The wisdom-Christology of vv.24, 30 coheres with the Wisdom tradition, and recurrence in Second-Temple Wisdom literature (Sir 24; Wis 7) makes the identification of Christ with God's Wisdom a well-attested move.

Medium confidence
Heb 1:1–4

‘Through whom also he made the worlds’ (v. 2) draws on the Wisdom-as-agent-of-creation tradition that runs from Prov 8:22–31 into Wisdom and Sirach. Thematic coherence (Wisdom christology) more than verbal volume; the LXX of Prov 8:22 (‘the Lord created me’) fed the patristic debates this verse anticipates.

Medium confidence
1 Cor 8:4-6 ?

Paul's "one Lord... through whom are all things" assigns to Christ the mediating role of Wisdom present at creation, by whom all things were made. The Wisdom-as-agent-of-creation tradition stands behind Paul's christological reworking of the Shema in v.6. Contested and faint, since the link is conceptual mediation rather than wording.

Low confidence
Jas 1:16-18 ?

Wisdom present with God at creation provides a faint backdrop to God begetting believers by the word of truth as firstfruits of his creatures. Contested wisdom-cosmology resonance.

Low confidence

Figural2

A typological pattern re-read in a later text — no verbal quotation, high figural coherence.

John 17:1-5

'The glory which I had with you before the world existed' (v5) figures the Son after personified Wisdom, who was beside God 'before the beginning of the earth' rejoicing in the inhabited world. Availability and Recurrence are high in Johannine Logos/Wisdom Christology (cf. John 1); the conceptual fit (preexistent agent of creation, delight/glory shared) is strong though the wording is not quoted.

Medium confidence
John 17:24-26

'You loved me before the foundation of the world' and 'see my glory' (v24) figure the Son after Wisdom delighted in by God before creation. The pre-cosmic love/glory shared between Father and agent is the same Wisdom channel that frames v5; coherent and recurrent within the prayer.
