'The firstborn of all creation' who is 'before all things' (v.15,17) recasts Wisdom, whom 'the LORD created/possessed as the beginning (arche) of his way, before his works of old.' The hymn maps Christ onto pre-existent Wisdom as the principle and firstfruit of creation; v.18 even calls him arche.
