Mary supposes the risen Jesus to be 'the gardener' in the garden of the tomb — John's deliberate irony casting Jesus as the new Adam who tends the garden (Gen 2:15), undoing Eden's loss. The garden + gardener convergence raises Volume and Coherence above the faint garden echo of 20:1.
High confidenceThe tomb is in a garden (Jn 19:41), and the empty-tomb scene is staged there, recalling Eden where God placed the man (Gen 2:8,15). The garden setting binds the whole pericope to a new-Adam/new-creation typology that surfaces explicitly when Mary mistakes Jesus for the gardener (20:15).
